Finding Hope in Uncertainty: Lessons from Ruth’s Story

Lately, I have been feeling stuck and lost in what I should be doing. Losing my job and being terribly mistreated at the last two workplaces seemed so impossible to make a difference and it left me feeling hopeless in working in the corporate world. I have many skills and talents and lately I have had no sense of direction of where to use them. For the past three weeks my husband and I have been fasting and praying and for the first time this week I woke up relieved and grateful for where I am. As we were fasting and praying, I sought out an online devotional and found the Bible Chat (Click here for Apple Download or Click here for Android Download). The app asked me what I was struggling with and was able to determine that my story sounded similar to Ruth’s story. She lost everything along with her mother-in-law Naomi and decided to follow Naomi and her God even with being unclear about her future. Sometimes as mothers, we can feel stuck and feel that there is one thing after the next occurring with our families, our jobs or our children’s whether they become ill, or bills aren’t able to be paid or, the stress of managing the home and feeling there is no light at the end of the tunnel or no relief ahead. But what I learned in Ruth is that our provisions, goals, and desires become delayed, but we are not forgotten. Sometimes God is putting us in a season of waiting as he is preserving us for something greater that he has stored for us and in this season of waiting we must put our trust in him and grow our faith. We must pray and keep watch when he calls us.

“A RUTH INSPIRED DEVOTION ON TRUSTING GOD ONE STEP AT A TIME”.
Key Scripture: “Where you go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people and your God my God.” — Ruth 1:16
Focus: Trusting God does not mean we know every step ahead. Sometimes faith begins with surrender, loyalty, and the courage to follow Him into the unknown.
Read: Ruth 1:6–18
Ruth’s story begins in a place of grief, transition, and uncertainty. Naomi had lost her husband and sons, and when she decided to return to Bethlehem, Ruth faced a life-changing decision. She could stay in Moab, surrounded by what was familiar, or she could follow Naomi into a future she did not fully understand.
Ruth chose to go. Her declaration in Ruth 1:16–17 shows more than loyalty to Naomi; it reveals a heart willing to embrace Naomi’s people and Naomi’s God. Ruth may not have known how God would provide, but she followed with the light she had.
Devotional Thought
What stands out about Ruth is that her obedience was not based on certainty. She did not follow because she had a guarantee of comfort, success, marriage, or recognition. She followed because faithfulness was the next right step in front of her.
Many of us want God to reveal the whole plan before we move, but Ruth reminds us that God often leads one step at a time. Proverbs 3:5–6 encourages us to trust in the Lord with all our heart and not lean on our own understanding. Ruth lived that kind of trust before she could see the outcome.
God Works Through Ordinary Faithfulness
When Ruth arrived in Bethlehem, she did not immediately see a dramatic miracle. She went to work by gleaning in the fields to provide for herself and Naomi (Ruth 2:2–3). God’s provision came through ordinary obedience, daily work, and the kindness of Boaz.
This is encouraging for our own walk with God. Sometimes we are waiting for a big sign, while God is already meeting us in small, faithful moments. Ruth 2:12 reminds us that the Lord rewards those who take refuge under His wings. Ruth’s quiet trust became part of a much greater story than she could have imagined.
Daily Devotion Connection
Recently, I found an app called Bible Chat that can help with daily studies and devotions. A tool like this can help create space to pause, read Scripture, reflect, and ask God for wisdom. Just as Ruth followed step by step, daily devotion helps us grow step by step. Check out the Bible Chat to see if it fits for your daily devotion connection (Click here for Apple Download or Click here for Android Download).
James 1:5 says that if anyone lacks wisdom, they should ask God, who gives generously. Daily time in God’s Word can become the place where we bring our uncertainty to Him and learn to trust His guidance for the next step.
Reflect
- Where is God asking me to trust Him without knowing every detail?
- What familiar comfort might I need to release in order to follow Him more fully?
- How can I practice faithfulness in the ordinary parts of my day?
Prayer
Lord, help me follow You even when I do not understand the whole path. Give me a heart like Ruth’s—faithful, humble, and willing to trust You one step at a time. Teach me to see Your hand in ordinary moments and to seek You daily through Your Word. Amen.
Today’s Step
Read Ruth 1:16–17 and write down one area where you need to trust God with uncertainty. Reflect on what opportunity he has already available to you that you can focus on. For instance, right now I realize he has given me the opportunity to be in communication with him, focus on my family, mentally heal, and tune into my faith as it is the current purpose within the midst of my situation. Then spend a few minutes in prayer, asking Him to guide your next faithful step.
